Based on research findings and in collaboration with experts on the specific areas, the RD-HHAR has developed several training modules for long-term care staff and/or residents’ family members.
1. RREM
Resident-to-Resident Elder Mistreatment
Resident-to-Resident Elder Mistreatment: Training and Education Guide
With funding from the National Institute on Aging and supplemented by the National Institute of Justice and the New York State Department of Health, three training modules were developed to address resident-to-resident mistreatment recognition and intervention strategies for nursing and other staff in long term care facilities:
- Module 1: Recognition and Risk Factors
- Module 2: Management of Resident-to-Resident Elder Mistreatment
- Module 3: Implementation of Best Practices Related to Resident-to-Resident Elder Mistreatment.
Narrated by distinguished journalist, Charles Osgood, with commentaries by leading multidisciplinary experts in elder abuse, a 25 minute educational film was produced by the New York University Department of Media Production as part of Module 2: Management of Resident-to-Resident Elder Mistreatment. The film contains short skits demonstrating different forms of resident to resident elder mistreatment, from the most blatant to the subtle. Each skit is followed by an example of what is considered a poor staff response to the event as well as a better practice, and by commentary by experts from four disciplines, representing different perspectives.
Research findings showed that the training program resulted in a significant increase in knowledge and in recognition and reporting of R-REM. Preliminary results from a cluster randomized trial trended toward significance, showing a 5% reduction in falls, accidents and injuries in the experimental group of residents for which staff training was provided, in contrast to the control group.

2. VISION
Recognition of Visual Impairment in Nursing Home Residents
With funding from the National Institute on Aging and by the New York State Department of Health, two training modules were used to address visual impairment recognition intervention strategies for nursing staff:
- An experimental segment demonstrating how a person actually experiences vision impairment
- A 22-minute educational video, The World Through Their Eyes, developed by the Lighthouse, Inc.
Research findings showed that the training program resulted in significantly less functional decline and increased positive affect in the residents’ group where staff was provided training.

3. SEXUAL EXPRESSION
Freedom of Sexual Expression: Dementia and Resident Rights in Long-term Care Facilities
The RD-HHAR completed this award-winning training video sponsored by a grant from the New York State Department of Health and by the Fan Fox and Leslie Samuels Foundation.
Narrated by Anne Meara, this program looks at sexuality and intimacy as basic human rights that should not be denied simply because the person has a level of decreased cognizance and lives in a nursing home. The video tastefully shows various sexual expressions, the effect of those expressions on the residents and those around them, and methods to allow freedom of sexual expression while maintaining a comfortable environment for other residents and staff. It also provides staff members with effective strategies to deal with inappropriate sexual behaviors, encourages family members to understand and respect their loved one’s continued need for intimacy, and provides sample policies and procedures on residents’ rights regarding sexual expression and physical protection.
“Freedom of Sexual Expression: Dementia and Resident Rights in Long-term Care Facilities” has received national media attention.
